10 Things You Can Do On the INTERNET Print E-mail
Thursday, 18 October 2007
A list of 10 things you can do online. It's about time you've joined the technology revolution and got things done faster and easier. Don't be afraid, ask for help or call support but whatever you do, it's time to move forward.

This list is in no particular order.

1. Pay Bills
Everyone is paying their bills online nowadays. You can pay taxes, cellphone bills, car loan, car insurance, home mortgage, cable TV, DSL internet, utilities, credit card debts, and just about anything else you can think of. Many of these wonderful services can automatically deposit from your bank account every month so you never miss a payment. You can actually get a small discount sometimes just for having an auto-deposit.

2. Find New Restaurants
No more driving around town to think about where to eat. Go to Yelp.com and find a new place to eat at! Actually, Yelp can do much more for you but that's another story. Read the reviews on Yelp and see how many other great foods or variations of your favorite dishes exist out there.

3. Check the Traffic Alerts
Don't ever get caught in traffic anymore. This is a big time-saver if you live in a metropolitan area. You can now use Google Traffic maps to see if there's a car accident nearby and find alternate routes to avoid the traffic.

4. Find Coupons
I never go shopping without searching for coupons off Google. Usually the easiest to find coupons are for the big chain stores like Walmart, Staples, Borders, restaurants, and the like. Best of all you can print out numerous coupons and bring a friend with you to take advantage of the coupon as many times as you like.

5. Run a Business
I don't know why people kill themselves to fight traffic to get to a job they don't like to report to a egotistical boss and work with annoying colleagues only to get paid an amount they don't like. Believe it or not, aside from the numerous work-from-home scams, there are MANY legitimate job opportunities from home. You can run a website or work for a call-center. Do data-entry, bookkeeping or run your own e-commerce business. The opportunities are endless and you only have to look around.

6. Do-It-Yourself
This category has limits but there are MANY things you can do yourself without having to waste money to hire a "professional". Most problems around the household in your life are not serious. A simple search on google can help you unclog a toilet, get rid of ants, remove a computer virus, get tree sap off your car, and a variety of other simple things that need attention around your house. I always tell people if it isn't dangerous and doesn't necessarily require a degree, you can probably do it yourself.

7. Long Distance Phone Calls
Yes, it's called VOIP (voice over IP) or for many people, it's called Skype. I don't know why people still spend tons of money in long-distance bills. Just jump on a phone and use voicechat! It's fast, free, and will allow you to even send each other pictures or see each other's availability without wasting minutes. All you have to do is find free internet calling software and make a call to your friend or family member over the internet.

8. Shopping
You can buy ANYTHING over the internet. Don't purchase from the store when buying from the internet is so much cheaper! The big counter I get to this one is when people say, "But I want to see exactly what I'm buying." Look, it's very easy. All you have to do is go into a store, try it on or demo it. After you're done touching and feeling all you want, just run home and buy it online from a reputable store. A good site that checks out online store ratings is www.resellerratings.com. If you don't need it right now, then save money by buying it online.

9. Take Classes
There are a huge number of classes available for actual college credit at most schools. You can now take online classes online so that you can fit school into your work schedule or finish school sooner. I highly recommend all those who have a busy life or just operate on a different timezone to do this.

10. Kill Boredom
There is NO excuse for having a computer with internet and still being bored. You can listen to music, watch movies, go to Youtube for all sorts of videos, read jokes, play games, read blogs, or other self-help or do-it-yourself type of stuff. There will always be a webpage dedicated to your passion so go look for it.

I'll eventually add more to this list later but for now, just enjoy. Thanks for reading.
