10 Reasons Why FRY'S ELECTRONICS SUCKS and Has The WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE Print E-mail
Wednesday, 07 March 2007
Here is my stab at making the ultimate anti-Fry's Electronics articles. I'm tired of Fry's Electronics because of their horrible service towards good honest paying customers.

There is no doubt it that Frys Electronics has bad customer service, terrible customer service, the WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE!
I spend roughly $10k-30k in computer technology purchases every year. Every visit to Fry's recently has more pathetic customer service. Fry's doesn't understand that I am already outgrowing my college student budget and that what use to be regular computer techie hobby purchases is now becoming serious IT business purchases for my clients.
----- TODAY BEGINS MY QUEST TO PUT FRY'S OUT OF BUSINESS. -----

I might not be able to do it. It's hard to empty such deep pockets, but I can sure as hell put a big dent in their pocket and help their more deserving competitors to get an edge. If only I was rich; I'd open a giant non-profit tech store just to put Fry's Electronics out of business.

I'm tired of Fry's Electronics taking advantage of people. False advertisements, fine print purchase terms, and rude customer service is only the tip of it.

A company this big and this rich can afford to offer quality service and a quality image. Everyone loves to shop here because their stores are huge and they seem to have everything. Growing up, the Fry's experience was a fun adventure trying out all the demo equipment and electronics and looking at all the different selections of products. It was a fun place to play. Then I got older and began making purchases at the place. Buying the latest games, cds, and computer stuff for my personal use. I got older still and began buying computer parts and shopped with friends and family while offering tech advice. Again, I got older and used Fry's as one of my main suppliers to buy parts for custom-built computers. Time passed and I became an IT professional constantly making weekly runs to Fry's to buy important network components and scrap parts for business offices of clients. I spend a ton of money every year and Fry's is extremely conveniently located just 5 minutes down the street but for some reason, I still choose to wait the 2 days for Newegg.com to ship me products.

Why?

Easy - Fry's is a terrible company. But don't take my word for it. There are plenty of other sites with huge archives of complaints againt the company. For this article alone, I will only use my TRUE and PERSONAL events.

1. Fry's Electronics treats their employees like crap - They are almost as bad as Walmart in this aspect. Fry's Electronics forces their employees to work overtime under extremely stressful conditions. Employees at Fry's Electronics are constantly placing the blame on everyone else but themselves. I had a friend named Vivi who was forced to work full-time AND over-time during Christmas when she was pregnant and was SUPPOSED to be allowed time off from work. How did Fry's Electronics do it? Easy, her manager subtly implied that if she wasn't able to work when they needed her the most, that they probably wouldn't need her at all.

I've also had many other friends who are ex-employees that tell me they love kicking around all the merchandise in the back especially when their managers treat them like crap.

2. Fry's Electronics does not care about quality - Everybody knows Fry's re-packages damaged and incomplete products as "new" or "open-boxed" at a discounted price. If it's been open, it has probably been damaged! Do not trust Fry's. There has been many moments when I have return items that I stated as "NOT WORKING" and watched is disbelief as the employee working in the returns department simply opens the box to make sure the product is there and then closes the box and slaps a discounted price sticker on the box and prepares the box to be put back on the shelf to be sold to another unsuspecting customer.

3. Fry's Electronics has terrible management - They don't know how to run a company. I don't know who to blame...it's certainly not the employees' fault. They haven't been there for more than a couple months. Everybody is always waiting. The flow of communication, information, and services is always slow in this company. I see customers waiting on employees, and employees waiting on managers, and managers waiting on supervisors, and supervisors MISSING IN ACTION. What is the hold up? Where are you guys? Fry's Electronics' management is non-existent.

4. Fry's Electronics' staff are poorly trained - This isn't the fault of the employees but the management. I've seen dozens of times when customers literally had to tell a Fry's employee how to do their job or times when a Fry's Electronics employee had to go grab another employee to answer a simple question. The Fry's Electronics employees also don't even know anything about the products sold in their department. There has been plenty experiences of my shopping at Fry's when I overhead an employee giving bad networking advice to customer and telling them to buy a specific product for all the wrong reasons. Of course, this is still better than all the Fry's Electronics employees that are in charge of a department but can't even find a product in their own department and can't even tell you what it does! I've found myself helping other customers while shopping at Fry's because the employees are useless! Employees should be trained to be knowledgeable in their department, courteous and helpful towards customers, and to be easy-to-find in their departments at all times! Want more proof that Fry's Employees don't know what they're talking about? Just go to the website or store and look at the job application. All of the jobs INCLUDING THE COMPUTER TECHNICIAN position have attached lines of "No experience necessary", "no degree necessary", and "no certificates necessary but are a plus". Yup, that's exactly what you get when you pay for Fry's Electronics to fix your computer - "No experience necessary." With luck, you'll get some high school kid with a passion for computers and can at least provide you with work that can at least appear to be on the same level of what an IT expert of several years can do for you. The bottom line is: don't take your computer to Fry's Electronics if you want it fixed right.

5. Fry's Electronics does not reward their best customers - I have not heard of any big company that does not offer a Rewards program for their best customers. Fry's Electronics is the first big company I've heard of to do this. Fry's employees harass me everytime I stop at the counter to pay for my purchase with the "Do you have a Fry's card? No? Do you want to apply for one?" I tell them NO NO NO every single time because they don't reward you for being a repeat customer. I get more rewards from my creditcard company than I do from them. Fry's Electronics is arrogant and they take your business for granted. No coupons, no membership only deals, no points programs...nothing.

6. Fry's Electronics CHEATS CUSTOMERS and do not honor their own word - I've seen tons of advertisements put on a newspaper and then I rushed to the store only to find myself and many others groaning when a correction and apology is printed on a piece of paper and glued to the front doors of a store taking back the claim of a certain deal advertised on the newspaper. I don't understand why they don't fire the person who does the ads! OH, I GET IT! They're doing it on purpose; yup, that's gotta be it. It's also known as a bait-and-switch tactic to get people to come to the store and shop. Fry's does it just about every week here. A perfect mis-print every single time. Unfortunately, some people don't even find out about the correction until they reach the cashier. Another part of Fry's Electronics deceptive practices is related to the return policies. They are strict and reasonable and for the most part, the return policies are fair. The problem is that Fry's Electronics forces customers to jump through all sorts of hoops and steps just to get their money back. They accuse customers of everything under the sun to try and keep people's money. Try going to Fry Electronics with a damaged product and if you're lucky, they'll take it back no questions asked. Every now and then, they'll question you and even blame you for damaging the product in which case, you won't get your money back. Even more disheartening still is when you buy one of those re-packaged products labeled with a discount and sticker verifying that the product is OK, then you come home and open it up and find out it doesn't work or is missing parts, and then come back to tell your story to the Fry's Electronics customer service department only to see them not believe you and keep your money.

This list goes on. Next up is the rebates. Ok, this is obvious: if you're going to buy a product with a rebate from Fry's Electronics or even anywhere for that matter, you are at risk to that promised money. They might not ever pay you or they may take like a year to do it and make you re-submit the rebate form numerous times. Goodluck!

More still is the extended warranty that Fry's Electronics pushes you to buy. Everytime I buy anything at Fry's Electronics, the employees keep pushing me to buy extended warranty. I DON'T NEED TO BUY extended warranty for a product that already has manufacturer's warranty. I will use for example, a motherboard. Most computer technicians can probably tell within 1 week how long the motherboard is going to last. High quality motherboards that will go bad will usually go bad right away allowing a chance to replace within the 30 day return period. Other than that, a good motherboard can go up to 3 years before it gives out on you. The point is, if your motherboard dies in 2 years, Fry's Electronics will probably not be selling that motherboard any longer and a replacement through their own warranty plan will probably take a good couple weeks. Keep in mind that most motherboards are built with a 3-year manufacturer's return policy and you can get the manufacturer to replace the computer hardware component part FREE OF CHARGE! Long story short - you don't need to buy the extended warranty, it is no better than the manufacturer's warranty in most cases and make sure that even if you DO buy it from Fry's, that they may not honor it at all or at least not in a timely manner! If you're going to buy extended warranty, buy it from the manufacturer!

7. Fry's Electronics has the worst customer service ever - I'm sure you've heard of all of these. Employees appearing to be busy every time a customer is about to approach them, employees ignoring customers by telling them to wait forever or giving them the "not my department" excuse, employees spending more time socializing with each other and talking on the cellphone instead of assisting customers, employees telling customers that a product not found on the shelf has also ran out in the back WITHOUT ACTUALLY CHECKING. I've seen managers argue back at customers like a 10 year old child. I also had a friend that was given bad advice by a Fry's Electronics employee and ended up buying the wrong printer cable. She came back to the store within an hour since she lived so close and Fry's Electronics refused to give her back the check that was STILL SITTING IN THE COUNTER NEXT TO THE CASH REGISTER as refund. Instead, they said she would received a check from Fry's Electronics in 14 days. This was unacceptable because she had a low income and needed to have the money to buy the correct cable elsewhere and did not want to risk any NSF charges from her bank should Fry's Electronics decide to cash her check. It took her 5 hours of arguing through the chain of command at Fry's Electronics before the store manager finally threw the check back at her and muttered a derogatory term under his breath.

Other stories of bad customer service at Fry's Electronics have always included an employee or even upper-level manager (shame on you!) promising to assist a customer in 10 minutes only to disappear for an hour. In fact, they will peek around the corner and wait to make sure the customer has given up and left before they return back to their department counter! I remember wanting to buy a big expensive all-in-one laser printer one time only to have one employee after another telling me it wasn't their department and that they didn't know where "the printer guy" was. I can't believe a company would leave this aisle unattended and unmanned for this long! I took my business elsewhere and bought the printer from Newegg and waited the 2 days and saved about $100 and hours of waiting.

Here goes another personal story that I have witnessed numerous times at Fry's Electronics. It usually goes something along the lines of a customer getting angry at a Fry's employee and then demanding to talk to the supervisor. At this point the employee says "ok" and then disappears to get his "supervisor". Here's the key part, the employee runs over to the next aisle to get his friend who's wearing a coat and tells his friend to cover for him. The friend wearing the coat walks over to the still-angry customer and says "yes, I am the supervisor" and then argues with the customer and behaves extremely rude while maintaining a giant smirk because the customer doesn't know it's not the supervisor. This is sad and pathetic. What's even sadder is that most of the time at Fry's Electronics, there IS NO SUPERVISOR or anybody else you can talk to. If you complain to the cashier, he or she will just get another cashier to try and deal with you and tell you the exact same crap all over again. Fry's Electronics has no heart. They simply bounce you from one department to another until you give up. It's the attitude of the managers and it's passed down onto the employees.

8. Fry's does not care about customer complaints - They have no central company website. They don't even care about their image or brandname or mission statement that will claim to uphold to the people. They have no openly listed customer-service phone number or venue for customer complaints. Their sales website has no customer service email or inquiry forms that can be easily found. They are not a real company! All they have they is the little white pads with pencil and the box with a slit next to it inside their stores SOMETIMES. What a joke. I have YET to hear of a story where somebody from Fry's Electronics actually take a complaint into consideration and try to make right of what their company did wrong. Fry's Electronics also does not care about potential customers either. I've called the store several times myself only to find the phone ring on forever. Other times when someone actually picks up, they give me attitude for making them look up to see if they have something in stock. There's other stories on the internet about people asking for quotes on $70,000 worth of merchandise only to take their business elsewhere because of extreme rudeness from the Fry's employee over the phone. I have no choice but to feel that Fry's Electronics does not care about any of their customers - past, present, or potential.

9. Fry's Electronics will never change their dishonest ways! - I have seen tons of employees and managers cycle through the store and time and time again I give Fry's Electronics a chance to change my mind and show me that an entire company cannot be judged upon the actions of a few bad incidents and employees alone. But year after year, I still see the same exact incidents at their electronics superstore and I keep hearing about the same dishonest business practices over and over again. Customers left wandering in the aisles looking for help, people arguing at the return lines, employees being rude, advertisements not being honored, and rebates not being paid. The problem is the company and its values. They've got no heart. They won't change their ways because they know people will still shop there. Fry's Electronics takes of advantage of people's ignorance and fears. Fry's Electronics makes a ton of money when people go to Fry's Electronics instead of looking for BETTER deals elsewhere like THE INTERNET!

10. My latest visit to Fry's Electronics - My last visit to Frys Electronics was hell in the form of a simple routine cpu and motherboard purchase to upgrade an older computer. The motherboard was DOA and I went to get it replaced at fry's. I waited 40 minutes in line to get to the return desk only to have them send me to the hardware aisle to get a new quote printed up. The new quote was printed up and I was told to go back to the return desk. I went back to the return desk and from here I was sent to the checkout line to PAY for my replacement item. This was totally weird but I figured the papers in my hand would resolve an even exchange. Turns out the motherboard was bought on a discount and I was now supposed to pay the difference between the discount price and current price. I argued at the counter and was sent back to returns after arguing with 3 cashiers and explaining to them that it was UNFAIR to have to pay a difference on a DOA part that was returned only ONE DAY LATER. Returns department couldn't help me because the person that handled me previously was gone and only she could UN-DO my paperwork and print me new paperwork for an even exchange. I'll try not to forget the fact that the manager yelled at me for not just asking for even exchange in the first place - I DID! Anyway, the employee never came back and the supervisor that told me to wait for her just went ahead and UN-did my paperwork despite that he said he couldn't do it earlier. Again, I was sent to the hardware department to have more paperwork printed to reflect the discounted price. This time, I wait an hour in line with numerous other customers that had been waiting 20-45 minutes before me for service. Everybody was mad as hell and I had no choice but to take a number. I finally get to a manager and he says he can't print me a quote for the discounted price and I had no choice but to go back to the return desk. I did but again they said I had to go back to the hardware department and tell them "Anthony says it's ok". I complained that I had already done that and finally, the 2 departments spoke to each other and handled my paperwork for me. It took me about 4 hours to return the motherboard. NOT WORTH MY TIME!

My final message to Frys Electronics: Frys, you are a piece of crap. You better wake up and change now. This is the 21st century and you don't shape up, your company will go out of business sooner than you think. Years of marketing have already proven that customers do not always purchase entirely on price. There are very many people that will pay a couple extra dollars for service and honesty and the moment somebody steps up, you will disappear. This is the internet age and more and more people are migrating to online shopping for better deals and better service. And if you still refuse to change, we'll just sue you into bankruptcy...or at least annoy you with tons of phone calls and make your bad business practices more popular than you want them to be. Damn, I wish I had more power.

Alternative Places to Shop -
Newegg.com - EXCELLENT prices (their everyday price usually beat Fry's prices even on sale days!), items shipped fast and cheaply, great deals, very helpful reviews and easy-to-use website and search engine.
Mwave.com - Just like newegg except they have the local pickup option which is great if you are within driving range of their City of Industry location and want your items right away!
Costco - Most people have a membership here and still don't know that Costco stocks many items at a lower price than Fry's Electronics.
Circuit City - You won't find much better service here but they have a great no-hassle return policy as of the moment.

Fry's stands for Fucking Retarded Yard Sale Electronics
written by willy wonka, March 08, 2007

Fry's Electronics stands for Fucking Retarded Yard Sale Electronics. It doesn't take much to see how fucking retarded Fry's Electronics is. As a kid I agree that I enjoyed the cool atmosphere of the store but as a frequent buyer of computer parts and accessories, I have to say that I have avoided the fucking retarded yard sale electronics store for a couple of years now. Luckily its not on my side of town but even if it was a block away I would cruise right on past it for some other electronics store.

I have to say that I agree with most or all of your points made. I have to add also that Fry's Electronics has the absolute worst quality hardware computer equipment and that their supposed deals are absolute wastes after calculating all your losses from getting a cheap piece of shit. I feel sorry for anyone that actually is dumb enough to take their broken computer or electronic equipment to Fry's for repairing. It's an absolute joke how much money these chumps make and they have the worst quality of ANYTHING you can imagine.

Fry's (fries) if your motherboard FRIES, you are SOL!!
written by Merganasatroid, March 18, 2007

I went today with my friend to buy some stuff to build a PC. There were 3 things with rebates, and the guy at the podium entered my friend's phone number and IGNORED requesting if it was the name (the phone # had his brother). After we were done and then checkout the rebate printed with his brother's name. My friend informed the cashier that the name was incorrect and please change it, void the rebates and print new ones. The cashier BITCHED something like 'it's not my job' etc. and got another cashier. We were informed that we would HAVE TO GO TO RETURNS, RETURN IT and then proceed to checkout AGAIN. I explained that it should be easy to do that but THE SYSTEM DOES NOT DO IT? I wanted to denigrate them, so I stated 'is your system program done by a kindergartener' after which I got an evil look from the cashier (she was bitching that she wanted to go home). We then declared 'ENOUGH' and said 'we just don't want to buy the stuff'. The MORON SYSTEM had the debit card already so we were FORCED to go to 'returns' and ANOTHER GUY entered ALL THE STUFF into the MORON SYSTEM to refund the debit. HEHEHE I just purchased all the stuff on Newegg.com and should be at my friend's place soon.

Is newegg.com reliable?
written by strapp3r, March 20, 2007

Is newegg.com a reliable source for computer parts? What other sites are there that are also reliable sources for computer parts and accessories?

newegg.com is great!
written by Agent Rado, March 22, 2007

I also recommend mwave.com, monarchcomputer.com for the best support/service/price overall. You can also check www.resellerratings.com before you order from any company. I hope this helps!

Not that bad here
written by Tyler, March 23, 2007

Fry's isn't that bad here in Washington. It's the only store in Washington though, don't know if that makes any difference. But it's pretty good here.

Thanks!
written by strapp3r, March 23, 2007

Thanks. I have been looking for a reliable source for some time now and those sites you mentioned in your comment are all great sources.

you're welcome

Twice was enough
written by Rob, March 26, 2007

The two times I have visited Fry's were regrettable experience. The company makes its money charging basically the same prices you can find anywhere, cutting costs by hiring children and not bothering to train them, and pocketing the difference.

I use a simple rule: whenever I can, I avoid dealing with people who are only doing their job until they can get a REAL job. I will happily pay more to work with a person who is already in his or her chosen profession. NOBODY at Fry's fits that description. For the most part, they are incopetents who I've even see walk out of their way to avoid contact with a customer.

People who shop at Fry's are only hurting themselves by increasing the scarcity of honest businesses.

Rob, you're absolutely right
written by Agent Rado, March 26, 2007

All the workers are totally untrained. Fry's throws them out asap to cover for the last guy that quit because he was being treated like crap and/or getting blamed for his co-workers' slacking off.

Dreaded Samsung Purchase
written by Brian, April 07, 2007

I have been to Fry's many times and made small purchases, under $200, and most of the purchases were legitimate, working products. A couple of times I had to swap products because of malfunctions and besides the nightmarish hell they call "customer service" it was an easy swap.

So I was looking for a TV, most of the time I would find a TV at Fry's and then look it up online on one of the computers in the computer department and find a much better deal; I was never planning to buy a TV from Fry's. However, one day while browsing the LCD TV's my eye caught a $3000 price tag for a 52'' Samsung LCD (LNS - S5296D), a spectacular price, but it was an "open box" item. If it says "open box", you better cover yourself in every way before you walk out of the store.

I got it home, open the box, and realized there was no packaging whatsoever, the remote was free to hit the screen and the power cord was a tangled mess wrapped around the TV. The next thing i noticed was that it was caked in dirt, the stand the TV came with was coated in dust, the remote had some sticky substance on it, and in my personal opinion it looked as if someone had just taken it to the desert eating waffles and syrup and realized that it not the right size, so they returned it. Not quite to the end of the story yet ...

Next i set up the Bose system and the satellite, then I try the tv and to my dismay I see two giant punctures in the lower right corer and a giant crack diagonally across the screen. These were not visible when the tv was off.

Next day I try to return, first they came back saying we can't give you your money back or can't make an exchange. I explained to them that there was no way this TV had been inspected, because it was way too dirty and there was no way for two giant punctures to happen on the ride home. So I talk to the store manager, he says he would have to do some "research" and figure out how it was packed and loaded into my car. Apparently this takes 3 days to do, so I waited, nothing. They still didn't want to give me a TV, when infact they had no record it had been inspected and they knew it had not been packaged right. Finally after arguing for another 3 hours, they gave me a replacement TV, which i had to pick up from another store. A week long purchase for a TV that was a lemon.

Moral of the story, inspect everything you buy from Fry's, because if you don't it will be HELL.

Keep in mind, Fry's policies do not care about the customers and don't expect many of the employees to either. While there is no animosity towards the employees because they are just pawns of Fry's management.

I will never buy another thing from Fry's, because of my miserable experience.

it's true, Fry's Electronics has terrible customer service
written by oguru, April 12, 2007

I was at Fry's once time and saw an old man at the front of the line walk up to the counter and placed a bag on the counter. The clerk took out a clear little box with some memory sticks inside. Everything seemed ok and from what I overheard in the conversation. The memory was only days old and was returning it because it didn't work with his system. For whatever reason, Fry's would not refund his money and chose only to give him a gift certificate which was not what he wanted. I don't remember what the policy was but I do remember how they treated him. He demanded to talk to the manager and that's when they started playing games with him. The sales return clerk simply point over to the other side of the store and said "oh, the managers right over there...he's over there somewhere, just go look for him." At this point, the old man was getting even more angry and said, "No, why don't you come with me to help look for him." They argued back and forth and finally, a younger and newer employee was unfortunately tasked to accompany the old man in hunting for the manager. This ordeal happened right in front of the long line at the return department and I thought it was the most unprofessional thing I had ever seen in my life.

god damn frys sucks

never buy from outpost.. same day shipping means it leaves the warehouse two days after you buy the product.. DIE FRYs DIE!

My 2 cents
written by Alan, May 19, 2007

I think some of this commentary is a bit on the harsh side, however all in all it's true. It seems that almost every time I come back from my 1 hour round trip drive to Fry's because of a newspaper ad I come back ticked off. Whether it's the 30 minute check out process to validate a discount... the fact that it takes standing in lines to get a piece of paper that gives me the right to buy something at checkout so that I can wait a second time for them to actually get the item... or my most recent frustration with their website not doing a price match because a) they're completely different from frys.com and b) they know if I order one and return it with the other invoice I'm out the shipping so it's not cost effective like it would be with a local brick and mortar store. I'm not one to cut off my nose to spit my face so I'll keep buying the deals... but I've also started to do things such as yesterday when I needed 3 UPSs I didn't pay the full Fry's price, but rather ended up ordering online from circuitcity.com (wish they would have had them in stock locally for pickup, but they did not). But the best example of Fry's vs a competitor is: I, too, but A LOT of computer equipment for clients, self, and do recommendations given that I'm the local geek. Last year I had a problem with MicroCenter. I complained. The manager of the store called me, was very nice and apologetic and send me a gift card as a token of apology. I did the same with Fry's after one of my many checkout issues. I got a call with lip service... I believe one of the comments was "you're in here to get some good clearance deals" which I took to mean that I don't matter.

Fry's for what it's worth
written by Jon, October 11, 2007

Agree with everything said about Fry's and have seen them repacking box's of software that had been brought back. One thing I've never understood is that I live about an hour away from them and have asked that they take my email address and email me their add each week because I wasn't going to buy a news paper just for their add. Don't understand so many of the stores paying thousands of dollars for their adds to be put in the papers but won't spend a dime sending that same add to their own customers so they can get return business that is of course if they havne' t already screwed that customer so bad they refuse to come back. What are the stores stores thinking of. The adds are laid out on the computers before ever being sent to the papers. I just don't understand why they'd not take advantage of the customers who go out of their way to ask that their adds be sent to them in email. Millions of dollars spent that's never scene by their own customers who would take advantage and at no cost to them. This is a million dollar idea for all casino's, theaters were different acts are played out or concert halls to let their own customer base know whats happening even if it's a year in the future. sales are sales no matter how you sell them why not look out for the customer and the bottom line at the same time, with out the cost of advertising

fry's electronics SUCKS!
written by vab, October 23, 2007

I have had it with Fry's Electronics. I went there yesterday to buy 2 motherboard and cpu combos. I also wanted 2 packs of memory and 2 computer cases. I'll go in chronological order. The moment I first walked into the Woodland Hills store in California, we came across the aisle of computer cases for sale. We couldn't find any employee that was willing to look us in the eye and answer our cries for help so we finally had to get one's attention by literally standing in his path and asking him to help us get 2 cases (they were stacked on the top shelf). He said he would send for a ladder and we stood around for 30 minutes. I couldn't take it anymore so I had my friend hold the shopping cart while I stood inside it and dangerously brought down the cases myself. Do keep in mind that the case-aisle is located right across from their repair center and there was tons of employees just looking at us without making an offer to help or call someone out. I find it odd that they don't care that I could fall, break an arm and sue their company. Then again, I don't find it so odd at all - it's right in line with how their company has been running lately. I go over to the computer section and asked them for the motherboard and CPU combo but the network was down and EVERYONE in the whole store had to reboot their computers leaving lines all over their stores. I can't hold anything against for this but you would think that an electronics store would have their networks running smooth and all their systems would be updated and properly maintained to eliminate downtime during business hours. In the hour that I waited patiently for our parts and for the computer to print out an invoice, I saw the checkout line cut through a quarter of the entire store. While I was waiting, the employees would yell and scream at each other in front of the customers. One employee seemed to be yelling at the others for being lazy and called them stupid as well as verbally threaten to report them to the manager. It was quite a show for all the people watching in the line at the computer section. The network finally came up and we took our parts and sheets to the checkout line. The lady would process our order and run off to the cage to get the smaller easy-to-steal parts like the CPU and memory. One package of memory was obviously opened and the memory was lying sideways instead of neatly fitting into the plastic shell space in the packaging. She tried to re-assure us beforehand that the memory was fine because it had been checked out. HA! Yea, right! Here's a tip everyone...if you don't want Fry's Electronics to give you a hard time when returning broken merchandise, just tell them that the merchandise still works but you want to buy a better model! They'll skip the check, free you of any blame for damage, and refund you even faster! I was a bit mad that the obviously opened memory did not come at a discount price like all their other opened merchandise. We asked her to get us another memory pack that wasn't open and she said that she couldn't and that there was nothing we could do. I said, "So we HAVE to get this memory?" and she said, "Yes, you have to." At that point, I angrily threw my hands up in the air and said, "Nope, I'm not going to get it."

Today's Fry's Electronics journal - broken system networks, long checkout lines, highly unprofessional employees, employees under-trained for customer service, and just plain bad service.

FRYS is bad in Renton WA
written by Paul, December 30, 2007

Frys in Renton Wa sucks. I was in there on Dec. 26th. 2007 for either a Samsung LNT4661-$1299 or Samsung LNT4669-$1899. 1 day after Christmas sale ad. I was there early... I asked the salesman how many were in stock, he disappeared to check and came back and said they had 4 of one and 6 of the other. I decided to go with the LNT4669 and 5yr Extended Warrenty. He did the paperwork and said I could browse around and pay for and pickup my TV at the front when I was ready. Browsed for a few minutes then went to wait in line. The salesman found me in line and said the only LNT4669 they had was the floor model. He said they would get 16 in in two days and check to see if I could pick it up then. His boss or whoever said the only way I could get it for the same price, was to have it shipped to my house for a extra $50. I said no, I would get the LNT4661 instead. He said ok and disapperared to the back of the store. This is all happening at the front of the checkout line. He came back 5-10 mins. later and said they out of that model as well. By this time I was very calm but fed up and just told the saleperson to forget the sale and tore up my papaerwork. I learned from this to never make any major purchases from Frys, and from what I've read on the net about their customer service and repair maybe this experience turned out for the best. They sometimes have good prices in their ads, but for large audio or video items I will take their ad to a reputable store- Magnolia, VideoOnly, even BestBuy or Circuitcity and they will match it

Working At Fry's is Definitely Not Fun!
written by Jenn, March 02, 2008

Fry's Electronics is the most incompetent company I have ever had the displeasure of working for! And that's saying a lot, considering I use to work for a Casio outlet store that is no longer in business.
At Fry's Electronics they are now completely forgetting about the typical 8 hour shift and scheduling people for 12 hour shifts! This is really f***ed up because one of my coworkers said she asked for more hours and they wouldn't give them to her! She is one of the lucky ones who only has 8 hour shifts!
On the day of Black Friday, every single Fry's Electronics employee is there from 5 AM to 11PM. Yes, 5AM to 11PM. You are not misreading this. FIVE FREAKIN A M TO ELEVEN P M! That is an EIGHTEEN HOUR SHIFT! When I asked management about whether or not this was even legal, they replied "It's really tough, but think of all the money you'll be getting!"
Which brings me to my next point--Fry's false advertises the wages people will be making when they start out as a cashier. They say "Up to $13!" when really they mean "Everyone starts out at $8/hr REGARDLESS OF EXPERIENCE!" Then they say that after 13 weeks, you'll get a raise. BULLSHIT! They will make it so you are not certified on time to get your raise in 13 weeks, and you will have to much, much longer for the next raise period to start. And then, you'll be lucky if you get a dollar raise.
OH! And at Fry's Electronics, your raise can go down! Yep, you can go from making $11/hr back to $8/hr like that! They have no souls!
Also, something that recently came up at my place of employement is that they lost a whole bunch of people's folders. Will they tell them what happened to the documents? No. So really our information could just be floating out there just waiting to be stolen/is already stolen. When I go to give them a copy of my driver's license and social security card for the SECOND TIME tomorrow, I'm going to demand to know what happened to the documents. If they don't tell me, I'm quitting on spot. This is ridiculous! If you are considering working here, please explore all your other options first!!

You guys are pampered.. it's not that bad.

The majority of your complaints are with customer services. Yeah they suck, they all got about 2 weeks training, but then again what's so hard about cashiering? Long lines? Yeah, well this isn't best buy. I look up at every store and there is about 50 registers, with about 25 cashiers on at all times. Except during closing time. The problem is the amount of people there and the maze you walk through to get to the line.

I think the white shirts screws the services up honestly. Because as a customer you assume anyone wearing a white shirt and tie can help you in that department. When in reality they could just be walking through to their department. Which then means when they turn you away your pissed. Then if they try and help and don't know shit, your pissed. It's a lose lose for them.

Also, open items? Are you serious? Your complaining about the open box items? Why didn't you splurge the extra 3 bucks on the new one? It clearly states it's open box and if you read the orange tag it tells you it's missing stuff. Have them open it if you wish to save some change and look and see if the missing items are necessary for your purchase.

About black monday, god that day does suck. I have no argument against that Jenn. I did sales and worked to cover for a short stacked team of 4 sales men. I worked 12hr shifts on the regular. They can schedule you for it due to the right to work and blah blah blah. That's one thing i think they should give people a head's up about. The hrs required to work. Then again they told me when I started. Every company displays their "up to" salary compensations. I was certified quick status and got my commission. As a cashier i was making 500 to 600 a week. As a cashier! The hourly thing is new, because of people like me i guess. My friend started 2 yrs ago and is now a manager and makes 55 - 70k depending on commission. Once you get out of the hell whole thats customer services you can make a decent living. Just don't suck at your job. Yes you can go from making 11 to 8. Then again you can go from 8 to 13. Just keep ringing up those Mitsubishi's!

All in all we all go there for the deals. Don't bullshit me about it thats why we go. I shop newegg as well but I can save more if i make the journey into the store. Management sucks, CS department sucks, but if you can find the person to help you then your good. If you go in buying computer components asking if it's compatible with such and such board, then maybe you should be putting one together.

I've always return things without a hassle, even my broken sony headphones. You buy extended warranties to avoid the rma process. If you get a board and it fries, fry's will replace it. If not then you have to send it to the manufacturer and about 30 days later and shipping cost paid by you (most not all) then you have your board. Same thing with TV's, you buy a 55 inch monster, they repair and give you a 40 inch to hold you down. Yes it's the oldest model, but then again you just broke a 55 inch tv.

The complains about the products hold no merit, the ones about work hours and service do.
