Top 10 Reasons Why Mozilla FireFox BEATS Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 at Web-Browsing Print E-mail

Think you know everything about Mozilla Firefox? ...Think again. Read on to see why Mozilla Firefox 2 kills Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 making it the best web-browser out there right now. (REVISED 2-14-07)

Here are the things you probably already knew about Firefox:

- tabbed windows

- session restores - this awesome feature restores the web pages you were surfing when Firefox crashed, so you don't have to freak out as much when your little baby cousin accidentally turns off your computer and you didn't bookmark all your open windows

- tons of free add-ons - Think your browser is all you need to get by? Think again. Download Firefox Extensions and Add-Ons here to see how much easier your life could be! There are tons of tools that make every aspect of web-browsing or data-collecting through the internet so much easier. I really can't explain this one, please see it for yourself and check out the top 3rd party add-ons and tools

- FREE! - Mozilla's Firefox is OPEN-SOURCE software meaning it is free to use and re-code as you wish. You are pretty much free to use the software in any as you please without paying a single penny. Unlike Microsoft's Internet Explorer, you will never be blocked from security upgrades or annoying "activation" windows

- clean simple design - Firefox is designed for quick and easy use. It is not bloated and wasting your memory by trying to look overly fancy like Microsoft's Internet Explorer

- remembers your passwords - Firefox easily remembers your website passwords in most forms and even in text boxes where (IE) Internet Explorer will not save username and passwords. Firefox also has options for you to easily view and edit your saved passwords. There are also optional password exporters you can download for Firefox to transfer all your saved passwords to another computer. In Firefox, you can also manually delete or edit entries instead of the very limited Internet Explorer which gives you no option other than deleting the whole list of saved passwords.

Here are the ways Microsoft

Here are some more great features to Firefox:

1) Multiple Homepages - That's right... most of you don't know this but if you open up several of your favorite pages, and then click on Tools > Options > and then click the "Main" button at the top left > and then click on "Use current pages" and then "OK" your way out of there, Firefox will save your currently open pages as your home pages! So from here on out, all you have to do is open up Firefox, and all your favorite pages will come up. This is useful for folks who have to open up the same multiple webpages everyday and everytime they jump on the internet.

2) Editable config settings - to improve, enhance, and customize Firefox to your liking. You can access these settings at "about:config". There are tons of sites on google that will tell you which changes to make to make Firefox load web pages you are surfing much faster.

3) Incremental Page Search - When you use the "Find" (search) feature in Firefox, via CTRL+F you can begin typing part of the word you are looking for, and Firefox begins to automatically search out the string of characters that you type AS you are typing. Microsoft Internet Explorer on the other hand, requires you type in a determine search variable into the box and then hit ENTER, and if nothing is found, you have to hit CTRL+F again. Wow, what a hassle...try it for yourself and you'll see how much it slows you down.

4) Transferable Settings - yup! You can transfer all your browser settings and I don't mean just bookmarks! You export saved login information, passwords, and previously filled out forms and settings! Internet Explorer makes these tasks difficult if not impossible. You can do it easily in FireFox using this Password Exporter Firefox Add-on.

5) Bookmarking all open multiple tabs at once - To do this, simply right-click a tab and select "Bookmark all tabs". You can also open an entire folder of bookmarks in tabs all at once; simply right-click the folder from your bookmarks menu and select "Open All in Tabs".

6) Spellchecker - Firefox includes a realtime spell-checker that spellchecks as you type and allows you to easily add new words to the dictionary by right-clicking the word and click "Add to dictionary"

7) Scrapbook - One of the most useful Firefox add-ons - EVER! Download the Scrapbook Firefox Add-on Here.

8) A functioning "View Page Source" Option - You can right-click any webpage and click on "View Page Source" to get a nice colored and formated window of html code. This is very useful and important for webmasters. IE, on the other hand unfortunately, only opens up a notepad with all the code jumboed together with word wrap in effect.

9) Security - Are you worried about websites using ActiveX compromise your computer? Maybe you're setting up a computer for your mom and Internet Explorer is too risky because she clicks "yes" on everything. Firefox is much more secure because it doesn't allow ActiveX coding.

10) MICROSOFT COPIED MOZILLA! - Let's get this straight. Microsoft's most recent offering of Internet Explorer 7.0 seems to be a total copycat as they did their best to make their web browser look as much like Mozilla Firefox's web-browser as possible. All of the new features in Internet Explorer are features that Firefox had a LONGGGGG TIME AGO! Firefox set the trend and IE copied that. Isn't that proof enough?!  ------ Note, I don't care that Firefox copied other web browsers. The simple truth is that Internet Explorer improved their browser AFTER Firefox started gaining a huge share of the web-browser market. Maxxthon was never powerful enough to really force Internet Explorer to improve, right?

*** REVISED ADDITIONS added 2-14-07 ***

11) Firefox's STOCK FEATURES are Better than Internet Explorer's - There has been quite a few people complaining to me that Internet Explorer could do everything Firefox did simply by installing an add-on. What the hell is the point of that? I'm sure if I knew programming skills....I could make Notepad an operating system! The point is...nobody has time to look for add-ons, and not many people have the computer-saavy to accomplish it. Having the options and features is nice but Internet Explorer after an initial simply isn't better than Mozilla Firefox after a fresh install.

12) Firefox is W3 Compliant - This is one that I forgot, so I have to admit it. Thanks to those that brought it to my attention. The internet has a universal standard to which a webpage should be built. It is disgustingly insulting to the people for Microsoft to not feel obligated enough to adhere to that standard. Because of Internet Explorer, many webpages have been created that are not coded properly and therefore are not compatible in all web browswers. Firefox has been the first W3 compliant web-browser that we've seen in a long time. It helps to uphold the standard for quality and compatibility reassurance to all websites and web-surfers.

Those were the top 10 reasons why Mozilla Firefox beat Microsoft Internet Explorer, but actually I've got a lot more. Some that are more useful to me than other people. I tried to stay broad to open the eyes of as many people as I could. For all you people still using Microsoft Internet Explorer and never trying anything else...shame on you - go learn some new tricks!

It's true, Internet Explorer sucks
written by IE Sucks, January 26, 2007

Well I was first introduced to this new style of webbrowsing not with Mozilla Firefox but with a rip off of IE, MyIE2. It was an open source project by some folks who decided that Internet Explorer had too many security loop holes, not so many great features, and a ton of problems with it. To make it easier for users to adjust to this new type of web browsing, they made it look very similar to IE in many ways but all the while making internet web surfing a more reliable, safe, and enjoyable time. Now MyIE2 has changed its name to Maxthon.

The basic background behind both Mozilla Firefox and the Maxthon web browser is simple. It's allows for a clean desktop because of the tab function that allows new links to be opened in tabs rather than a new window. Of course this doesn't mean that you can't open a new window if you feel like it. If your the type that likes to search multiple web pages in one time, this is the way to go. Being the fact that this is an open source project, a lot of the security loopholes are fixed and regularly updated by dedicated programmers from all over the world. They make sure that you don't accidentally press "yes" or "ok" to pop up windows that download extra junk onto your computer without you really knowing it. Not only that, like the article states, there are FREE add-ons that you can customize onto your web browser to make web surfing truly a unique and enjoyable time for you.

All in all Internet Explorer can not matchup to the impressiveness of Mozilla and Maxthon. I recommend everyone to download Mozilla Firefox FIRST because it is truly a great web browser. If you already have tried Mozilla and your satisfied with it, stick with it. Me? I actually interchange between Maxthon and Mozilla. I just have a certain dedication to Maxthon but still love to use Mozilla when doing research and other similar web surfing because of add-ons like scrapbook.

In conclusion, play around with Mozilla for a hour and you'll never look back at IE ever again.

I agree.

Wow, I've never tried maxthon.

Copycat
written by Magus, February 04, 2007

Actually, Firefox copied tabbed browsing from InternetWorks browser and, for the sake of argument, Internet Explorer had an add-on in 1997 which allowed tabbed browsing (since you are considering many add-ons for firefox advantages, this is fair play).

From wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tabbed_browsing#Web_browsers):
BookLink Technologies featured tabbed windows in its InternetWorks browser in 1994. Independently, the founders of Opera built an MDI-based browser in the same year (via a technical preview not available publicly; a public release was made in 1996). The tabbed interface approach was then followed by the Internet Explorer shell NetCaptor in 1997. These were followed by a number of others like IBrowse in 1999, Opera in 2000 (with the release of version 4), Mozilla in 2001

this page is full of shit
written by Klassmaster, February 06, 2007

you dozy cunt, most of that is wrong.
IE7 has most of those features, how ignorant and arogant can someone be at the same time!

IE is still king though, always will!
written by Some geezer, February 06, 2007

LOL to above comment, he has a point.

Firefox is good, but it aint that good!
As a web programmer I'm using both, I find using Maxathon, IE7 and a handful of add-on's (Microsoft's Developer toolbar is stunning) I have more than Firefox can do for me so far.

Just to quickly re-visit your points though, here's my comments:

Multiple Homepages
IE6 & IE7 has that too, or just use the maxathon add-on.

Editable config settings
IE7 can be edited too, use google

Incremental Page Search
Agreed, Firefox has it sorted in this area

Transferable Settings
IE7 can export too, use google for the add-on

Bookmarking all open multiple tabs at once
IE6 or IE7 with Maxathon add-on

Spellchecker
Google toolbar can do that too in IE6/7

A functioning "View Page Source" Option
IE5,6 & 7 have always been easy to change the view source option to open up your own preferred editor.
As a web programmer, I'm frustrated at firefox having some crappy own version.
Oh, and notepad wraps until you tell it not to - get over it.

Security
If you're hopless with computers, agreed, get Firefox
But you'll miss out on Active-X rich content.

MICROSOFT COPIED MOZILLA!
Urm, so Maxathon wasn't copied by either?

I don't understand you dummies
written by null, February 06, 2007

Okay, but nobody here mentioned that IE7 is BARELY w3 compliant, and that FF is FULLY compliant.

and ActiveX is a bigger security hole than anything else "fuck rich content" web 2.0 full compliance is WAY better.

fyi: maxathon copied mozilla too.

Stupid

If you had a brain, you'd be dangerous: wake up and smell the coffee. Firefox lunatics like you somehow get this strange illusion that there can be no other browser that compares to Firefox, aka God. You're blindly accepting Firefox as perfect, when it just isn't. Period. Nobody thought to mention the superiority of the Trident engine in rendering text.

text rendering alone won't save IE......it's more about functionality than looks.
written by Agent Rado, February 14, 2007

i can't see how a supposedly better text-rendering engine alone can put internet explorer over firefox. on a high-quality monitor using the proper resolution....text can be seen just as clearly as any....... but oh wait, we could also make the argument that there might be an add-on for firefox to solve this inferior text-rendering deficiency?

...
written by nix, February 14, 2007

lol. IE7 uses ClearType for rendering text. Go to Screen Propieties and enable ClearType for all apps. The problem is Windows. Test font rendering in Linux and u will see.

and YES, FIREFOX IS PERFECT !!!!!!!!! XD (im no comunist :P)

POW -..- turn Firefox into a web server :O

...
written by nix, February 14, 2007

Firefox 3 has the better font rendering up to date.

Calling someone a cunt over a browser is just plain wrong.
It shows the intelligence level of some people who have vocabularies
as small as their wangs.

Mozilla Roks
written by Eva, April 01, 2007

I still can't understand how come some people still stick to IE! What has Microsoft done for you?
It gave you only 2 Releases in 5 years. Mozilla had 3 in 2 years! I mean HELLO!
and did anyone considered the fact that Internet Explorer tracks your web surfing habits and stores this information in hidden files? Read about it here: http://www.fuckmicrosoft.com/content/ms-hidden-files.shtml

wow EVA!

the painful truth - Microsoft spies on the people in yet, ANOTHER WAY!

ie7 vista
written by roland bowman, August 17, 2007

well i got vista and sure its all new. I had xp and learned that faster. But its too new for me to say yet. Im not tech-savvy, but getting there each day with my new toshiba laptop. I got to keep vista premiun for now or lose the warranty on the lap top tosiba. then i guess i could get xp back or update to the new and improved vista bu using all the microsoft updates. Far as browzers go I got no beef yet with ie7. i tried mozilla firefox a few yrs back and not too lucky with it. But as I improve at learning the basics I will be honest. Just cause i won vist premium and a toshiba dosen't mean i will brag em if i find xp to be better after a few months i will admit it. roland bowman/song writer and wanna be programmer

here's an experiment...
written by michael, August 21, 2007

Enlarge the text in your Firefox browser (or use CTRL scroll button). Now do the same on IE7 or Opera. Both of the latter have far superior rendering engines that allow full-screen zooming/shrinking, which means they're also able to print out a helluva lot better than FF. It also means that they enlarge the text without screwing up other page elements.

I love FF. I use it almost exclusively. I use many extensions. But in this one area, IE (and Opera) is way ahead of FF.

i totally agree with Michael
written by Agent Rado, September 01, 2007

Firefox text is not as "smooth" as it can be and yes, I have noticed the difference in print quality. On some printers, your page might even come out at 25% size to what you see on the screen. It's very strange and it's happened to me before.
