Rado's Fix - Internet Explorer Has Stopped Working Error Message Problem In Windows Vista Print E-mail
Thursday, 24 May 2007
Ok...here is a darn annoying problem that has hit many people so far.

The problem is that you get a little annoying error message window everytime you open up the new Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 when using the new Microsoft Windows Vista version. In my case it was a brand new Dell Dimension E521 bought 2 weeks ago that came with Microsoft Vista Home Basic.

Microsoft Internet Explorer worked fine at first but then after I installed some key programs for my client, it started crashing and showing a window with this error message:

"Internet Explorer has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

Read on for the solution...

At this point I click CLOSE and then Internet Explorer 7 just closes out and disappears along with the message. The crash is annoying is here are 2 work-arounds that I have found so far.

1) Go to the Control Panel, and then go into the Internet Options. For those of you that don't know, you can quickly get to the Internet Options by click on "Classic View" on the left or clicking on the Network and Internet link in near the middle of the window on the left side.

After you go into Internet Options, go to the Security TAB and un-check the box that says "Enable Protected Mode". After you disable the Enable Protected Mode, simply click APPLY and OK. After you close out and open up Internet Explorer again. You will find that everything works again. If a little yellow bar comes up under the address bar annoying you about Protected Mode being turned off, just click it and select the option that doesn't notify you about anymore.

2) This other option didn't work for me but it might work for some of you. You can also go into Internet Options in the same place as Step 1, but instead of the Security TAB, you go to the Advanced TAB and scroll down to where it has the options for phishing. Just disable the phishing option or address filtering protection thingy and then click APPLY and OK.

3) *updated version* - I found out that many people are getting this problem because of conflicts with their Internet Explorer add-ons. Try uninstall all your IE add-ons. It might be that they are not compatible with Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 in Microsoft Windows Vista. I will be posting more information as I learn more about these issues.

It's crazy that we still have Microsoft Internet Explorer problems this bad on version 7 but you can consider this a sign and go Firefox like I have. Goodluck!

Dear Friend, I just can't believe how simple it was to fix my problem. Even the computer service center here in the Philippines could not tell me what you have suggested. Everything works fine now! Great! Thank you very much! I have been using Firefox, but somehow it seems to be slower.

If you're talking about the explorer crashing. It might be that you have a problem with your codec. Go to google and search "kazaa lite mega codec pack" and you'll find a ton of links to download the codec pack. Install that and let me know if that worked for you.

On the (off-topic) topic of swearing
written by jfk, June 09, 2007

A voice in the wilderness says: While I don't blubber (though I have been known to whine on occasion) and while I'm quite the opposite of right-wing or conservative, I do find swearing to be somewhat jarring. It disrupts my flow when reading. Invocations of my personal deity also derail the narrative for me.

I always tried to teach my own children that swearing is the last refuge for a person who cannot find the words to express their passion. Beyond that, however, I don't judge. I just try to read past my own disruptions.

On topic: check for Skype plug-in
written by jfk, June 09, 2007

When we disabled the Skype add-ons (there are two, I think the offending one being called something ominous like "Skype mastermind"), it solved our particular case of this error.

Thanks but

Just installed Vista upgrade and immediately ran into this problem. Your fix worked perfectly. Can you tell me what I have lost because of turning off "protected mode"?

to null
written by Agent Rado, June 10, 2007

Protected mode secures your web-browsing experience by creating more layers of defense for your web-browser and computer. It basically adds extra shields so that hack-programs have a harder time breaking into your system.

But the real run-down is...if you're not an idiot and don't fall for silly pop-ups that claim to give all god-like powers to your computer... you'll be fine without it - just like you were with Internet Explorer 6 just 2 years ago.

More information about Microsoft Internet Explorer's Protected Mode can be found here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/IETechCol/dnwebgen/ProtectedMode.asp

Thanks a bunch... best work-around so far for this annoying problem.

Luckily I have Fire Fox 2.

Another work-around is to reset Internet Explorer settings:

From Control Panel
Open the Internet Options icon
Select the "Advanced Tab"
Click "Reset"... bottom right of tab.

thanks Bigal

written by Frammie, July 09, 2007

Thanks - I'll try that but I am now getting thye same problem in outlook when I try and add attachments - like the IE problem it was ok originally!! Firefox is ok but sometimes the formatting of sites is not very good

still same probleem!
written by frammie, July 09, 2007

IE still shuts down when I try and access a site that has a pop up password box - e.g. cpanel
Outlook has same error "mess"age when browsing for an attachment

Looks like we are Vista Guinea-pigs!

Thanks for your solutions
written by Voyajah, July 09, 2007

I have noticed that you have to "play around" with the order of these fixes: try one, then another, change the order, then reset options, then try restarting computer, until you hit the right combination. And then- Jackpot!, IE works again. But, overall these options are not given in any of the standard help, so Thanks for the info. Very Quirky programs!

thank you, now i can search on ebay again.
written by chuck, July 15, 2007

IE was closing everytime i tried to do a search on ebay. once, i disabled the security proteced mode and went to ebay, up popped the dealio toolbar, which was the source of incompatability. after i uninstalled the dealio toolbar, i was able to search on ebay normally with the protected mode enabled.

Windows Explorer--different type of error
written by KnotInMud12, July 19, 2007

My error is actually anytime I start my computer and seems to have nothing to do with Internet Explorer. I don't have to be using anything for this error to appear. It is running a loop about every 2 seconds and I have no time to click on anything.

I was told to check this internet site because my internet explorer gives me that same message. However it happens after i try to close the browser. My friend recommended that i try to use Mozilla, which i did download, and all my problems seemed to be fixed. However when i try to run the updates recommended by HP, it gives me the same message, even though im not trying to deal with internet explorer what so ever, and my default is on mozilla. I've been on the phone with the HP people for almost an hour and they havent helped me. If you have any solution let me know. THanks! :)

written by Scrapangel, October 09, 2007

As of today when I try to open IE 7 it tells me that it can not be displayed. I close and try again. By the 5th time it will generally open up. It is a pain when I am trying to search for something or I am in a forum. I have rebooted 10 times today and it still is not working. I have run Spybot and Norton and nothing was found. I also get the crash error and it closes and immediately restarts to do nothing!!! Will these fixes work for me also???

The Definitive answer, part 2
written by GRIM REAPER, November 21, 2007

Pay Attention People. I have the answer. **** HERE IS PART TWO*****

NOW, here is the F**** problem, MICROSUCKS, solved with a little tweaking (for the advanced users): HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVe rsionInternet Settings <<<< TOO MANY POSSIBILITIES HERE. For people who know what they are doing when they get there, especially UseCoInstall key parameters. Give me credit for it when you fix it by listening to me, Microsoft crawlers. Won't be the first time I solved a problem but was too lazy too write a patch myself, because Microsoft would just rip it off if it became popular/widespread. Actually I tried to do it but Vista sucks ('nuff said): I tried writing a command-line regedit script to take care of the gory details for me (as well as supporting my failing memory), but frustratingly I failed to get it to work. Here it is:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentV ersionInternet Settings]
"UseCoInstall"=-
The above text goes into a text file e.g. NoUseCoInstall.reg. It then is invoked with the command
regedit /s NoUseCoInstall.reg (which obviously can go into a .bat file if you're feeling lazy).
Unfortunately this procedure doesn't change anything in the registry. No error is reported by regedit. I'm reasonably (a lot, actually) convinced the syntax is correct, so I'd gratefully acknowledge any suggestions from anybody more at home than me in the meanderings of Vista as to why this should be the case. If you just downloaded a fresh codec because some website asked you so that you could watch a video, esp. if it was porn & especially for Windows Media Player, you are a gullible noob. Can't believe you fell for it, and you got what you deserved. I won't post the solution for that here, cause it is lengthy. Email me with the subject line "I am a noob" at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it and I might get around to helping you. Replies are great, but I probably won't ever see this forum again or reply back, so email me your thx or whatnot for saving you from a bad headache. ---- p3ac3, the gr1m_r3ap3r

multiple problems reported are only symptoms of a larger problem
written by Susan Llewellyn, November 22, 2007

I've tried each solution posted in this forum. The Reset in Internet Options worked for a short time, but IE7 still failed after one run. Some deeper bug is lurking here. I'll use Firefox for a while until I see a real solution.

Windows Explorer Stopped Working Error
written by TUQAN, December 10, 2007

I have the same problem as indicated by many of you but also with Windows Explorer. I'm using Vista Ultimate..fresh install with updated virus protection (AVG) and updated Spybot S & D....no problems found. However both windows explorer and Internet Explorer will stop and restart. In addition, I cannot install from MS Update the Ultimate Extras Dreamscene option. Not sure if the latter is consistant with other users or not but that is also one of my issues

Internet Explorer Stopped Working
written by BlackBelt, February 05, 2008

Mine stops working after I have been using explorer. I also have an issue with Deleting files under interent Options. It gives me a rundll32 error. Whenever i do not check the delete files under add ons, i do not get the error.

I believe both problems are tied to an add on. I am completely unimpressed with Windows Vista.

I have unchecked the "Enable protection". It did not help me. So I still believe that the problem is going to be that one or more of the IE Add Ons is not compatable with Vista.

Stay Safe! and thanks for all the comments.

Problem with IE7 & vista
written by null, February 22, 2008

It is possible that some of the programs that start automatically at startup are preventing IE from working. I had the problem mentioned at the top of this post and used the above work arounds. However, I discovered that Omnipage Pro (OCR) software was opening during startup and this was affecting IE7! Stop Omnipage automatically starting and the IE problem went away.

Turning off he phishing and the automatic protection didn't stop my computer from giving me the "internet has stopped working" message. But, after doing it, the error message of which program that was creating the program finally popped up. It was a Yahoo dll file that was not compatible. I removed the "yahoo browser" that came with my laptop in the uninstall programs menu, and it stopped completely. I was able to turn the phishing back on, and the automatic protection again. Everything seems to be working fine now. (for now, I've never had so many problems with a computer right after purchasing it in my life). Thank you for that Vista!

Thank you for the suggestions!

SOLUTION
written by Johnny B Good, May 06, 2008

I've tried everything as well. Is really annoying!! The solution can be found here, on:

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/114310-internet-explorer-reset.html

What worked out for me was disabling DEP (Data Execution Prevention) from the command prompt and then restarting. Just perfect!

Good luck, cheers!

I suffer this bug, too
written by Javier Toledo, May 28, 2008

I bought a new laptop, a Gateway with Vista Home Premium installed and at 2 weeks using it, this occurs to me. The solution was enter to Control Panel, Internet options and "REstore advanced settings" in the Advanced tab. Now it opens some pages but when closing it, still blocked, and don't closes properly. Fortunately, the first thing that I do with a new PC or laptop is install Opera browser.

Was very useful, I don't imaginate what to do in a PC where the only browser installed is the worst in the world.... suddenly can't browse the internet... How can you navigate to get help, support or paying accounts with your laptop but with thw browser in coma state ?

I suspect that the Google Desktop may be the responsible...I will try to uninstall and expect it get corrected.

Regards...

Same problem with Opera
written by ram, June 23, 2008

After hitting this problem with IE7 on Vista Home Premium on my brand new laptop, I switched to Opera browser.

Even on Opera I am hitting this stupid problem. It now says "Opera stopped working".

The problem does not seem to be specific to IE7, rather it is to do with Vista ?

Any solutions ?

Thanks

Hi

I was facing the same problem and about to do something really drastic like restoring my new Compaq to its original factory state (but that would have meant that all the new programs which I had installed and had activated would face problems when I reinstall them as I cannot re-activate them without writing long emails to the software companies).

Thanks, thanks, thanks! You are a real savior.

1. GO TO CONTROL PANEL
2. DOUBLE CLICK INTERNET OPTIONS

4. SCROLL DOWN FOR THE PHISHING FILTER OPTION
5. SELECT "TURN ON AUTOMATIC WEBSITE CHECKING" BUT ONLY IF SELECTING "DISABLE PHISHING FILTER" DOES NOT WORK.

Everytime i use IE I'm really surprised about how much ads some pages uses. Online newspapers use so much flash, that some pages takes 3-4MB (unless you ban all the ad-sites)
