Think Microsoft Windows Vista is the answer to all your problems? Nothing could be further from the truth...

Microsoft Windows Vista is not the answer to all your prayers and may even add to your prayer list. Read below before you get duped.

Vista will cost you a new computer - Don't believe any of that Vista Capable or Vista Premium labeling on desktops and laptops being sold. If you waste your money buying Microsoft Windows Vista software, you will soon realize that your computer just isn't fast enough to appreciate Vista at the same speed as your existing operating system. In fact, a $1000 desktop still can't handle Vista the same way a $400 machine handles Windows XP. It's sad but it's true. It takes a ton of memory, hard drive space, cpu speed, and video graphics processing power to appreciate all the new "features" of Microsoft Windows Vista. Vista Premium ready PC's are not even fast enough. I have a system using 2gb DDR2 of memory on Vista that still isn't as fast as Windows XP with only 1gb of DDR memory.Vista will cost you as much as a VERY GOOD new computer.

Vista is SLOW - Yup, it's a power-hungry beast. Part of the big lure for Windows XP was that it performed almost as well as Windows 98 and was very efficient at handling resources. The same just can't be said about Vista. It's a power hungry beast that isn't anywhere near as quick and snappy as Windows XP. Too many just aren't willing to admit it. The indexing, fast search capabilities, User Access Control, and pre-loaded security crap are the main culprits. Forget what you've heard about Vista making better use of dual-core processors. It just hasn't brought any results at this moment in time. Don't take my word, just see it for yourself - Vista is FREAKEN SLOW!

Vista is NOT more secure - Windows XP can be just as secure as Windows Vista without sacrificing speed and features and annoying you in the process. All the extra security features are not INCLUDED free in Vista. You pay for it with the bloated price of the operating system and it's not any faster or secure than the free alternatives by Grisoft's AVG anti-virus and anti-spyware.

Vista is nothing new! - System encryption, fancy GUI effects, and multimedia management, powerful indexed search capabilities, remote access, administrator-level control, and security protection have ALL BEEN in existence before Vista and for FREE! Microsoft Windows Vista is NOTHING NEW and nothing revolutionary!

Vista does not work with all your software - This is especially true if you use a ton of unknown programs with a small user base. Vista will not work with all the cool little utilities written by freelance programmers to make your everyday life easier. Vista for some reason is not compatible with a ton of advanced software. Currently, Tivo Desktop has not yet been released for Windows Vista. What a darn shame! If you need ALL your software to work, forget about Windows Vista for now.

And now for the ULTIMATE FLAW ABOUT VISTA:

Microsoft Windows Vista will not make you more productive! - How could it? it will cost you more money, but run slower, while attempting to give you features that already exist for free from existing companies. In case you're still sold on Vista's transparency effects, why should you have to buy a new premium computer for this wonderful privilege?

Do I really need to spend $1000 for a system that won't run all my programs and only runs it slower when it does?

It's true

There are tons of free software available that can give you the same capabilities of Vista, customized to your own preferences, and it won't eat up memory and processor speed like Vista. Now this isn't true for every computer user because there are some people who would rather just pay a company to do all the customizing for them. Then the best solution is to just stick with Windows XP and get over the need for a fancy GUI (graphical user interface).

Linux is a free operating system that any non-gamer can use to do exactly the same things that Microsoft Windows provides. The catch is, you have to put in some time and effort to learn how things work because sometimes, things are not packaged nicely for you to use 'out of the box'. Now if you have a basic grasp on the concepts of economics you should be able to rationalize that spending about 20 hours reading up on and playing around with Linux is cheaper than spending over $1000 for a new computer (price of Vista not included if OEM version not available), assuming you do not have a job that pays $50 per hour or more after taxes. Most people spend much less time getting adapted to Linux if motivated to do so.

Now some people who already know a little something about Linux might say, "Linux does not provide the same GUI as Windows Vista does." True, 'out of the box' linux distributions generally do not provide the GUI that Vista provides. However, thanks to the world of open source software, you can now download a program called Beryl, a X Windows Manager, and voila you have yourself a fully customizable desktop with all the perks of Vista and more.

The best part is the fact that it is all free and it will work on your existing platform while using up about 74 MB of memory. That's, on estimate, 450 MB less memory used compared to Windows Vista for the same capabilities and eye candy. That's probably a huge underestimate as well on Vistas part. Spend up to a maximum of 20 hours, you probably will spend about 10 hours, learning all the perks of Linux and how to install and run 'free' programs to match the feel of Windows Vista. You'll be amazed how inefficient Vista is.

Also, if you MUST have Windows Vista, then the best bet is to just wait 6 to 12 months while hardware technology as well as software capabilities finally meet up with the insatiable appetite of Windows Vista.
